ForkLift 4 beta is finally here

As you probably know, ForkLift 4 has been in the making for an extended period of time, longer than we anticipated or desired. But finally, the wait is over and we are ready to release the first beta version of ForkLift 4. We hope that you will like the new version. We would greatly appreciate it if you could help us by using the beta version and providing us with feedback.

The Evolution of ForkLift 4: From Minor Improvements to a Complete Rewrite with SwiftUI

When we started thinking about releasing a new major version of ForkLift, we didn’t plan to change a lot of things in the code. We simply wanted to create a modern GUI and add some highly requested features. But as has often been the case in the past, developing the new version resulted in a complete rewrite of ForkLift from scratch once again.

We realized that if we wanted to be able to continuously add new features to ForkLift as we are planning to do, then we needed a good foundation to build on. We decided to use SwiftUI, the new user interface framework by Apple, to build the UI of ForkLift. SwiftUI was very promising because by using this framework the code becomes much simpler, which is always a big plus, especially for the developer of ForkLift. It is really great to work with SwiftUI, but it has presented some big challenges too. Some things that we wished to create with it are simply impossible to do at the moment, so we had to make some workarounds. At this point, the UI of ForkLift 4 is around 80% written in SwiftUI.

Creating a fresh look for ForkLift 4 and improving user experience

Developing a new major version of an application is a huge challenge and it is hard to decide how and where to start and where to go from that starting point. In the case of ForkLift 4, it was very helpful to create the GUI first. We wanted to develop a GUI that was both fresh and streamlined, and we believe we succeeded in achieving that. We decided to add some themes to choose from, which go well with the streamlined design. As soon as the new GUI was ready, the app felt like a totally new app and it had become much easier to fill it with functionality.

We have incorporated numerous small features to improve usability. To name just a few, we have moved the status bar from the bottom of the window to the top and integrated it into the status bar. We’ve added the option to colorize the icons in the sidebar. Additionally, you can use these colors as color labels for the path bar, making it easier to identify your current location. If you drag a folder over the plus sign in the tab bar, then that folder opens in a new tab. We have also added new tools to the toolbar. We have enhanced the Spotlight search in ForkLift to not only search Spotlight’s metadata for file names as it did in the past, but also to search within the content of items.

ForkLift 4’s protocol updates: direct connection to Dropbox and OneDrive, MFA for Amazon S3, and simplified key authentication

Some of the bigger changes affect the protocols in ForkLift. ForkLift 4 can directly connect to two additional cloud service providers: Dropbox and Microsoft OneDrive.

ForkLift 4 also can handle connections to Amazon S3 buckets even when the user only has bucket level permissions. In addition to that, users can use Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) when connecting to Amazon S3.

In ForkLift 3, to use a passphrase protected private key, users had to manually add the key to the Keychain and modify the config file. However, in ForkLift 4, no extra steps are needed. Users can simply enter the passphrase on the Connect Panel, just as they would with a normal password.

In some cases, not responding NAS devices caused hangs in ForkLift. This issue occurred when in the background ForkLift was trying to communicate with the NAS but the NAS wasn’t responding. In other cases, a lot of ongoing activities made ForkLift to beachball. We worked very hard to solve this issue, and we can proudly say that at the moment, ForkLift 4 is handling this problem much better than any of its competitors.

Faster syncing and improved filtering in ForkLift 4

We have put a lot of effort into enhancing the Sync feature of ForkLift. Syncing has become significantly faster than before. The analyzing phase before the synchronization takes considerably less time, and users receive immediate feedback on the progress through a real-time counter displaying the number of folders being analyzed for syncing.

It is important to note that the way of filtering items in the Sync Window has changed. In ForkLift 3 we used positive filtering (include filter), which means that the filter only kept the items that matched the filter criteria.

In ForkLift 4, we are using negative filtering (exclude filter), which means that items that match the filtering criteria are filtered out, and only items that don’t match are left to be synced. The filter conditions can be applied to files, folders, or both of them. This reverse approach will definitely have a steeper learning curve, but it makes a more complex filtering possible. We placed a strong emphasis on improving the performance of ForkLift. Because we have improved file caching by a significant amount and utilized new technologies provided by macOS, we were able to also optimize the efficiency of syncing.

Maximizing productivity with ForkLift 4’s new features: iCloud Drive favorites sync, customizable tools with unlimited bash scripting, and dynamic preview pane

Adding the option to sync the favorites through iCloud was a highly requested feature. In ForkLift 4, synchronization of favorites occurs through iCloud Drive, and iCloud Drive only. We opted to discontinue using Dropbox for synchronizing favorites because of the 3-device limit on Dropbox’s free plan, and concerns expressed by some users about using third-party services for syncing. Since all Mac users have an Apple ID, all ForkLift users can use iCloud Drive without issues to sync favorites in ForkLift.

While the Tools feature in ForkLift may be overlooked by some users, it is a valuable resource for power users. In the past, the Tools had limitations, but in ForkLift 4, it is now possible to create custom tools using bash scripts without limitations, allowing users to execute complex commands just as they would in Terminal.

We also changed the Preview Pane on the right side of the ForkLift window, it can now be used in three different ways.

  1. You can use it as an Info Window with the preview displayed at the top and the file info displayed below that. The file info contains all the data that is displayed in the Get Info window and all editable fields (such as permissions, owner, tags, etc.) can be edited right in the Preview Pane too. The file info also contains the metadata of files.
  2. You can also open the Activities in the Preview Pane. Unlike the Activities pop-up, the Activities in the Preview Pane will remain open until you navigate away. This way, you can always keep an eye on the ongoing activities.
  3. You can also display the Activity Log, that contains the successful and failed activities.

ForkLift 4 is packed with numerous other improvements, which are ready and waiting for you to explore.

Be the First to Test ForkLift 4: Become a Beta Tester!

With the release of the first version of ForkLift 4 beta, we are looking for beta testers to help us improve our new app. As a beta tester, you will have the opportunity to be one of the first people to try out ForkLift 4 and provide feedback on its features and functionality. If you take part in our beta testing program, then your feedback will help us identify any issues and make necessary improvements before the app is released to the public.

If you want to be part of our beta testing program, then download and install ForkLift 4, and make sure to move the app into the Applications folder. Send us suggestions and bug reports at support [at] binarynights [dot] com. Should ForkLift crash, make sure to send in the crash report through the “ForkLift Crash Reporter” that opens after you reopen ForkLift after a crash. (You can close the other crash report that can be sent to Apple.) Before sending the crash report to us, please add a comment describing the actions you were performing in ForkLift when the crash occurred.

We are looking forward to your feedback!

  1. Can the beta run at the same time as the current (3.5.8) version of Forklift?
Is there an expiration for this beta?

    1. Yes, the two versions can run at the same time. This version will stop working on the 1st of May. We will continuously release new updated beta versions.

      1. hm. when I put it in the application directory, it will overwrite existing 3.5.8 version. how should it run at the same time???

    2. Please quit ForkLift 4 and go to the Downloads folder in Finder. Drag the ForkLift 4 beta over the Applications folder in the sidebar to move it into that folder. Finder will notice that an app with the same name already exist in that folder and will ask you what to do. Click the Keep Both button. That way Finder will automatically rename the new version. If you want, you can then rename the beta version into ForkLift 4. (You can also rename the beta version before moving it into the Applications folder and then there will be no warning at all when moving the app.)

  2. Wow, with this version I can finally save and rename files with umlauts (ÄÜ …) on a Linux SMB server (Unraid). Great!

    1. You can use AirDrop the same way in ForkLift 4 as in ForkLift 3. Right-click the file(s) you want to share and select Share from the menu, then select AirDrop.

  3. Finally!!!!
My card is ready where to buy it???
    So far it’s really great.
Something I would like, but I don’t know if it’s feasible, when you’re on a pane, double click on below the folders and it brings you to the folder above. That’s a good way to navigate between the folders. I hope I’m clear 🙂
    Thx

    1. You can only buy ForkLift 4 when the final version is released.

Do you mean that you want to be able to double-click the empty space in the pane to go one level up to the parent folder?

      1. That’s what I understand from the question. It’s akin to what Linux does and it’s quite a useful navigation option

    2. I have added this to our feature request list and we will consider implementing this in the future.

      1. I was joking about the buy, I’m waiting for a while, so can wait and use the beta version for now :).

I thought I wasn’t clear, but finally, you and Paul understand what I said :).
That’s exactly what I was saying and as said Paul, when you have the habit to use it… hard to go back.
Thanks, hope you’ll be able to integrate it.

  4. Hm. You didn’t mention something concerning the minimal release of MacOS we need to run FL4.
Big Sur doesn’t seem to be supported 🙁

    1. Yes, you are right. Unfortunately, because of the modern framework, ForkLift 4 only runs on the latest macOS versions: macOS Monterey and macOS Ventura.

      1. Thanks! I’m fine with that. I just didn’t WANT to update in the past. I knew some day I would be forced to update by a piece of software I use. Seems that this is getting closer 😉

  5. In ForkLift 3 I could add sftp site favorites and use the Host name as defined in my ~/.ssh/config file. However, ForkLift 4 no longer recognizes this and forces me to use the actual IP or DNS name. This is true for both non-routable and routable addresses. Is this deliberate or a bug?

Example: when I add this server as a favorite in FL3, I can just put “my_site” in the “Server” field. In FL4 I have to use 192.168.4.128

    Host my_site
    User userguy
    IdentityFile ~/.ssh/userguy-my_site
    HostName 192.168.4.128

Also, when I edited the favorite in FL4 and hit Save, the “Server” field reverted back to the original value. I edited it again and the second time it actually stored the value when I hit Save

    1. In ForkLift 3 we used the built in ssh engine of the macOS but in ForkLift 4 use a different framework that doesn’t support this by default. We have added this to our to-do list and will try to make this possible in the future.

Can you reproduce the other issue while you are editing a favorite? If you can, then please send us a screen recording about it at support [at] binarynights [dot] com

  6. Mighty, thanks for that. Feels great, still a few untranslated items in the menu in the German version. But I have a few questions regarding tags:
    1) When I add new tags by just typing a few tags, they new tags do not show up in finder…are they different tags than the finder tags?
    2) Is there a way to have the (some) tags in the sidebar, just like in finder? This would make life a lot easier.
    Thanks again
    Rolf

    1. The localization of the beta version isn’t ready yet, first we will focus on fixing the bugs:)

      1. To submit a tag, you should press Return one more time. The first Return just adds the tag to the list, the second submits it. If you add multiple tags at the same time, you should press return twice only after the last tag.

      2. We will consider adding the tags to the sidebar in the future.

      1. Hey
Thanks for the quick reply. Cool about the double return…is this documented? Works like a charm and even colors are synced.
Sidebar: This would improve things a lot. I realize it’s difficult to tell, but any ETA?
        Thanks
        Rolf

      2. Oh, and while we are at it:
Any chance for a branch view, that shows all files in all subfolder and allows filtering in these files as well?
        Thanks!
        Rolf

      3. There is no documentation yet. It is not likely that we will add branch view to ForkLift but I have added your idea to our feature request list.

      4. Pity about the branch view, love this feature with Total Commander (Windows). Any ETA for tags in the side bar?
        Cheers
        Rolf

    2. Can you send us more info about the branch view in an email?

There is no ETA for the tags. It is not likely that we will add those before releasing the final version of ForkLift 4 because we want to focus on fixing the issues first.

      1. I encourage you to prioritize tags in the sidebar. Tags are an essential organizational feature for me (and I suspect they are for a lot of other people, too). Not having tags in the sidebar means I have to use the Finder a lot more than I would like to. I accepted that as a limitation of ForkLift 3, but given how many years tags have been around I would expect tags to be a feature of ForkLift 4.

      2. Thanks, yes, indeed, tags are crucial, just like they are in finder. It’s also important that the user can decide which tags show up in the side bar just like in finder.
        Cheers
        Rolf

  7. Can you share information about the planned pricing?

I truly hope you are not going to introduce a subscription model?

  8. When I change the arrangement in the tree view, it doesn’t save the position. After restart it is default.

    1. Do you mean list view? What arrangement are you changing? If possible please send us a screen recording about how you change the settings and what happens after you have restarted ForkLift. Send us the recording at support [at] binarynights [dot] com

  9. I wish (and actually provided a feature request in the past) Forklift would include quick filtering in file / folder lists, i.e. where you start typing “de..” and the file / folder list shows only files / folders like “demo”, “idem”, “bonafide.txt” etc. (like TotalCMD does on Windows or Nimble Commander does on macOS).

    1. That is possible in ForkLift 3 too. You just have to turn off Search in Subfolders and instead of Searching, ForkLift filters the items. The same is possible in ForkLift 4. Just click on the Magnifying glass and select by Name and make sure that Search in Subfolders is not enabled.

  10. I’d suggest adding an option to disable SMB discovery directly in settings instead of using command line. SMB discovery can cause duplicate and confusion, especially when connecting to NAS with different accounts.

  11. Looks nice – unfortunally the Shortcut Shift-CMD-“.” for Hiding Files is also in Forklift 4 not usable 🙁

      1. Good evening,
the issue is that you can not assign the shortcuts shift-cmd-. It appears after assigning only cmd-: – but then it does not work and when editing the shortcut you see cmd-ü

    1. Please send us a screen recording about this at support [at] binarynights [dot] com. Make sure that all relevant information is visible in the recording. You can create a recording by using the Shift-Command-5 keyboard shortcut.

  12. 1. in der Symbolleiste geht kein vor und zurück einzufügen
    2. es fehlt die Möglichkeit die Zeilen in der Ansicht unterschiedlich farbig zu stellen wie in FL3

    1. 1). I run into the same issue only to reakize it is already there, just on the very far left. You can’t add it twice.

    2. 1. What macOS version do you use?
      2. When can’t you add the back and forward buttons? Did you delete those and tried to add them again? Or what is happening exactly?
      3. You can set the alternating background in the View Options (Command-J shortcut or View > Show View Options from the menu). You have to set that in all open tabs.

  13. Finally it !!!! Thank you guys for releasing this shiny long-awaited (beta) version !
I was using forklift3 through Setapp, but couldn’t get rid of finder because of the lack of support for the Cloud Storage.
This is the feature I was expecting the most for FL4. is is now there. I’m very glad 🙂

  14. FL4 looks very good. But in shortcut settings I can’t assign “Enter” key to Open, F8 to Move to Trash, ESC to Show Devices etc. which is show stopper for me now.

      1. I uninstalled FL3 but the same situation with the shortcuts.
Only commands in combination with cmd/opt/shift work.

      2. This is a bug in beta1, it has nothing to do with ForkLift 3. There is no need to uninstall ForkLift 3. We will fix the issue in the next beta version.

    1. Thank you for writing that blog post about ForkLift 4!

We will look into this issue with the services, thanks for reporting it.

    1. There is no drop stack but ForkLift 4 should remember the view settings of folders. Is that not happening?

      1. Yes, that’s not happening (list/columns/icon view setting not retained on folder basis). I thought there was going to be a drop stack in FL 4….

    2. Could you please send us a screen recording about this issue?

We were considering adding drop stock to ForkLift 4 but we haven’t. Maybe, in the future.

  15. Great news! However, I use Forklift 3 heavily for SSH/SCP operations and v4 not supporting SSH configs and SSH agent keys is a non-starter for me. I’ll be keeping an eye out for those features. Glad to see the future of Forklift.

  16. The colorization of the sidebar icons is nice, and so is its reproduction in the menu bar path. But this color is not maintained for the subfolders.

For example, if the sidebar folder icon is red, the sub-folder retains the original color.

    1. Yes, you are right. That feature would be useful in some cases, but if you colorized your home folder with red, then all your folders inside your home would be red, which wouldn’t be very useful. But theoretically, we could color the subfolders red as long as some subfolder doesn’t have a different color, and from that point on, we could use that color as long as there is no other color. I think this might be a good idea on remote servers but not such a good idea locally.

  17. Great news !
I am very interested in a better Dropbox integration but I can’t find any mention of Dropbox in contextual menus or anywhere I can think of, am I missing something ?

    1. We will look into which context menu items would make sense if you are connected to Dropbox as a server, and if it is technically possible to add them.

    1. Run this command in Terminal, and restart your Mac:

      defaults write -g NSFileViewer -string com.binarynights.ForkLift;
      defaults write com.apple.LaunchServices/com.apple.launchservices.secure
      LSHandlers -array-add ‘{LSHandlerContentType=”public.folder”;LSHandlerRoleAll=”com.binarynights.ForkLift”;}’

Run this if you want to use Finder instead:

      defaults delete -g NSFileViewer
      defaults write com.apple.LaunchServices/com.apple.launchservices.secure
      LSHandlers -array-add ‘{LSHandlerContentType=”public.folder”;LSHandlerRoleAll=”com.apple.finder”;}’

      1. Hi, thx for your reply – unfortunally it doesn´t work:
        2023-04-07 09:20:45.648 defaults[87879:6287224] Could not parse: ‘{LSHandlerContentType=”public.folder”. Try single-quoting it.
        -bash: }’: Kommando nicht gefunden.

      2. For those who get an error with this code: change all the curly quotes to straight quotes. Obviously, the four curly double quotes should be straight double quotes, and the two curly single quotes should be straight single quotes.

    1. Sorry for this. If this happens in column view, then we have already fixed this issue. If it happens in another view, then please try to provide more context.

  18. “Double-clicking on a .doc file does not open the word processor (for me NeoOffice), you have to right-click!”

In fact, double-clicking does not open any files, regardless of the application!

Another bug : when I close a connection from the sidebar, the directory does not appear in the sidebar, nor in the ForkLift 3 sidebar, but the connection remains open, I navigate between the remote directories…

And ForkLift 4 does not keep the defined appearance: in column, in list… when (re)opening the application!

    1. Can you send us a screen recording about the connection issue and the appearance issue at support [at] binarnights [dot] com?

      1. In fact, the connection does close! On the other hand, when a connection is opened with FL 4, the remote server does not appear in FL 3, and vice versa, but this is perhaps normal!

And ForkLift 4 keep the defined appearance: in column, in list… when (re)opening the application!

    2. Servers that you have connected to in ForkLift 4 don’t appear in ForkLift 3. That is normal. Only shares and mounts appear in bot of them.

  19. When the app ist set to full screen, also the information window (CMD + I) is shown in full screen.
The information window does not show the size of a folder.
The information window cannot be closed with CMD + W.
With nearly any activity inside the app it says it needs the Xcode Command Line Tools to be able to use git. (Thee may be users of ForkLift 4 who do not use development tolls on their Mac!)

For me interesting new features (compared to ForkLift 3):
    – Pin a tab
    – Instant file preview within the information window

    1. Gosh! It should say “There may be users of ForkLift 4 who do not use (or want to have) development tools on their Mac!”

    2. Thank you for reporting these. We will look into them. You don’t need the developer tools, that is a bug, and the pop-up won’t appear in the next beta version.

  20. Drag and drop from the Messages application, for example, does not paste an image into FL 4. It works fine with FL 3 or the Finder.

  21. On an older Mac at the moment (for which I upgraded to FL3 only today, before even seeing this post) but I’m curious to hear: Is a hashing or checksum verification feature implemented or planned for FL4?

Verifying file integrity is becoming increasingly important to me. I work mostly with SFTP and B2 so there’s still a bit of rsync and rclone in my workflows, but I do love the convenience of the ForkLift GUI.

    1. That is not planned for the near feature but that is on our feature request list and we might add checksum verification in the future.

  22. Hi guys,

it seems that pursuing an alias is not working properly. I created an alias to a directory in my iCloud Drive and Fork Lift 4 is not able to open it.

  23. The shortcut CMD-SHIFT-E for “ejecting” connections does not work, neither for connections to servers via SSH, nor for those to SMB shares.

There is the menu entry in the File menu, but it is grayed out.

  24. Hello,

With ForkLift 3, I created several favorites directories, a favorites directory of local folders, a favorites directory of remote folders, and a favorites directory of folders to be synchronized, which I placed in the sidebar.
The first two are present in ForkLift 4. The “sync” folder is present in the sidebar, but it is empty, and it does not appear in the menu bar favorites at all.
If I click on the Favorites menu > Show Favorites, all folders are present, but the sync folder shows “0 items”.

    1. The sync favorites from ForkLift 3 can’t be used in ForkLift 4. ForkLift 4 shouldn’t have imported them, but unfortunately it did. Please delete those favorites, and set them up again.

  25. Have notifications on Macos Ventura been deactivated? Notifications are one of the most important things, as I can find out if and when a file has been updated on the server.

    1. Notifications haven’t been deactivated, or at least not on purpose, and we aren’t aware of any issues. Please enable the notifications in the System Settings.

  26. A big wish list would be to be able to start a favorite sync from the command line. I use ForkLift primary to keep my machines in sync, and the ability to run already-defined syncs from the command line could bring my need to VNC into the sync machine from a few times a week to maybe once a month.

  27. Forklift 4 beta 1 is the best file manager thus far for me, ready to buy 🙂
I have encountered a minor bug: the network favorites I had defined in FL3 did not work properly when imported in FL4. However, deleting and re-creating them worked.
Now as a minor feature request : Have a “treat packages as folders” button for use in the toolbar

    1. Could you please check what the path of one of that favorite was in ForkLift 3 and what it is now in ForkLift 4? Do you remember how that was imported?

    1. Unfortunately, we don’t have the resources to develop an iPad OS version. That would be nice though, but it is not realistic at the moment.

  28. Not a big fan of the new combined status/path bar on the top. For me, it’s too chunky and visually distracting (+ too much unused white space). I personally like the way Forklift 3 did it more.
What I’m really missing though, is a way to have file size and date always aligned to the right of the panel in list view. Without having to re-adjust the columns every time the main window size changes.
Also, a quick way to hide the right side bar (preview, activities, logs) would be nice.

    1. Thank you for your feedback, we appreciate it. You can add the preview button to the toolbar, and using that button you can quickly close and open the preview pane. To edit the toolbar, right click it, and select Customize Toolbar, then drag the Preview button over the toolbar to add it.

      1. Thanks. But it’s not very obvious, is it? 😉 Because what this button does can nowhere be found in e.g. the view menu (that’s where I was expecting it). Unfortunately this also means, that there seems to be no keyboard shortcut for it.
And after having read the thread about the removal of file selection via keyboard, allow me to add my 2 cents here: I assume that people who use dual pane file managers are mainly IT professionals. We are used to using keyboard shortcuts/navigation. Otherwise we wouldn’t get our work done (ask your devs :)). So you might reconsider your direction in favor of more mouse use here. Because that removes IMHO one of the big reasons of choosing an alternative file manager over the macOS Finder.

      2. You can open and close the Preview Pane from the View menu too, and there is a shortcut for that command. And even if there weren’t a shortcut, you can customize the shortcuts in ForkLift.

  29. I do not see a way to find a folder size in either the info dialogue or preview window.

Also I do not need developer tools but every minute a dialogue pops up asking me to install. Any way to disable this?

    1. Thank you for reporting that. The developer tools aren’t needed. The pop-up won’t appear in the next beta version.

  30. Are multiple tags still not visible in Forklift 4? I use lots of custom made tags for my files that help a lot structuring files and those are all visible at the same time in the Finder. Just looked at Forklift 4 and still only one (I suppose the last set tag) is visible.
Not to mention how helpful this can be in filtering files as it was mentioned earlier in another thread.
That really needs to be fixed until the final release.

    1. We will improve tagging in ForkLift 4 in the future but it is not likely that new features regarding tagging will be added during beta testing.

      1. Thanks for your reply. I (and most likely many many others) have been waiting for so long for version 4 and this was the one missing feature that drove me nuts in version 3 and forced me to go back to the Finder all the time.

  31. I would love to see AppleScript support return to re-enable interactivity between Forklift and Default Folder X.

  32. Thanks for sharing FL4

I have a Bug and did not found where else to put it.

When selection several folders and select “calculate folder size” / shift+CMD+S only the first folder becomes a size calculated.

  33. Thanks for release! Can you tell me how to connect to S3 with bucket only permissions? Are there any docs for FL4? Whatever I put into S3 connection settings I get permission denied. Some sample screenshot would be helpful.

  34. In FL3, the Space key could be used to select or deselect elements. Now the Space key opens the preview of the element. How can individual elements be selected with the keyboard without using the mouse + command?

    1. We have removed the keyboard selection from ForkLift 4. Selecting items with the Space key isn’t possible any longer.

      1. That’s bad news, very bad for ex Total Commander and ForkLift 3 users. Any chance you implement that again?

I literally spent time trying to find that option and then reached you out here.

      1. This are really very bad news.
From the beginning (NC – Norton Commander) it was always possible for a split-view file explorer to select source and destination objects (several) with the space key. This is the only way to operate a FileExplorer entirely without mouse interaction. Full use of the keyboard is essential for people who deal with many file operations on a daily basis. I cannot understand why a long tradition is being broken here. FL3 is great and suitable for pros. But with the elimination of keyboard selection, the FL4 can only be used by newbies/dummies. I think no professional user will support this. Probably you can start a survey, who really needs this function? Please, please bring back the selection by keyboard (Space). Kind regards, Dani

      2. I agree with Dani. The main reason why I’m using ForkLift is my long habit of using Norton, Windows, Total, Midnight commanded or similar. Keyboard is the way for split-view file managers.

        Please return option back.

Another one, backspace/delete is not moving one folder up?!

      3. Z, on my search for config “select items with space key” i’ve found that the action “parent folder” can be configured with your own key 🙂

      4. We decided to remove keyboard selection from ForkLift 4 because we feel that the demand for that feature is not very high. Besides, a lot of users use it by mistake and constantly write us support emails asking why they can’t use the Space bar to QuickLook files. We also feel that it is difficult to reconcile keyboard selection with the functioning of macOS.

      5. I understand but please return option to make change shortcuts, space to be select, F3 for QuickLook. That way, you will cover both. Dummy and advanced users 🙂

      6. Be careful: A split view file explorer’s main purpose is to be able to move/copy files and folders from source to destination. The main task is the selection of items. The second main task, since the beginning, has been the complete use/operation via keyboard. If now “we think, come on, let’s do this differently and turn off the function…” (works perfectly in FL3, also on macOS), then I question FL4 and its future. Then it would be a simple finder in terms of operation. Apple can do that from home. But FL4 wants to shine with the beautiful redesigned UI, which is really nice. But please do not experiment with the basic functions! Users who express a wish to use the space key for QuickLook are a) dummy users or b) younger users (I can only work with the mouse, the keyboard is too difficult for me and I can’t remember the shortcuts) ! Please differentiate yourself and offer a real alternative to TotalCommander on macOS native! And please, also a main task in the Split View Explorer is: After an action from Source -> Destination (copy, move) a refresh must take place on both sides. The FL4 can’t even do that from the start. This is worrying me. Kind regards, Daniel

    2. We hear you regarding keyboard selection.

What do you mean by this? “After an action from Source -> Destination (copy, move) a refresh must take place on both sides. The FL4 can’t even do that from the start. This is worrying me.” Doesn’t ForkLift 4 refresh the file view? From where to where are you copying? If possible, please send us a screen recording of this.

      1. I totally agree with Dani! When I was switching to Mac, I spent days trying to find a TotalCommander alternative and I found it in ForkLift. Tbh, it’s not as good as TC but close enough that I can live with it. I had high hopes that with FL4 you will continue that path but you did the opposite.
Dani is right, if FL4 looks and works as Finder, then why does FL4 exist?!

Do not reinvent the wheel, just copy TotalCommander 🙂

  35. Hello,
A little feedback on the latest beta (Beta 2 (402))

    1) Double clicking on a file does not open it.
    This is fixed, thanks.

The other bugs, I noticed, are not yet fixed:
    2) Drag and drop from the Messages application, for example, does not paste an image into FL 4.
    3) The workflows, I created with Automator, are not accessible from a right click onto files.

    4) A suggestion:
Would it be possible that actions accessible from a right-click in the Finder are also accessible with ForkLift, for example the Quick Actions (Annotate, Create PDF, Convert Image, for example).

    Thanks

    1. 2) The dragging issue is not an issue of ForkLift but the Messages app
      3) + 4) Can you send us an email about these to show us what worklfows and quick actions you mean? Send us some screenshots or a screen recording.

      1. 2) The dragging issue is not an issue of ForkLift but the Messages app.
Curious, it works with FL 3 😉

        3) + 4) I send you some screenshots.

    2. Please enable Full Disk Access in the System Settings and you should be able to drag from the Messages app.

  36. At least Enclosing Folder can be changed to backspace/delete. Without file selection and backspace I almost gave up of FL4. Now I will keep testing but please make it keyboard friendly.

  37. I can no longer copy a Dropbox link in Forklift. I now have to navigate to Finder to do it which is a massive workflow killer. Would be good to bring back this function.

  38. Sometimes after moving or modifying files, the preview is not displayed.

Sometimes clicking on a directory or a remote directory has no effect, it is necessary to click elsewhere in ForkLift to display it.
