ForkLift 4.2 is available – Display Up to Three Color Tags in List View

ForkLift file manager with 3 color tags in list view

ForkLift 4.2 is available with numerous fixes, improvements, and two highly anticipated new features.

One of the standout new features is the ability to display up to three color tags in the List View. If an item has more than three color tags, only the most recent three are displayed, providing a clear and organized view of your tagged files.

Another major addition is the option to set a preferred pane for opening remote connections. This feature allows you to choose from three options under ForkLift > Settings > General > Open remote connections in: Active Pane, Right Pane, or Left Pane. By default, remote connections open in the Active Pane, maintaining ForkLift’s previous behavior. However, many users have requested the ability to lock remote connections to a specific side, such as the right pane, to reduce the risk of user errors.

If you lock remote connections to the Right Pane or Left Pane, remote favorites and the Connect Panel will always open in the chosen pane. After the Connect Panel opens and you connect, the connection will open in the same locked pane where the Connect Panel was displayed. For users with a horizontal layout, the Left Pane corresponds to the top pane, and the Right Pane corresponds to the bottom pane.

For example, selecting Right Pane in the settings ensures that saved remote favorites and the Connect Panel always open on the right side, regardless of which pane is currently active. If you need to open a connection in the opposite pane, you can simply drag the tab to the other side or use the View > Swap Panes command for a quick switch.

Here is the full list of what is new, improved, and fixed in ForkLift 4.2

  • Fixes an issue where ForkLift didn’t restore the correct order of columns in List View when the “Always resize name column” setting was enabled
  • Fixes an issue in Column View where, with the “Restore windows and tabs on startup” setting disabled, the previous locations were reopened instead of the starting directory
  • Fixes an issue where the Actions toolbar button did not function correctly in certain rare situations
  • Numerous minor fixes and improvements

        1. It’s so mind boggling because it’s so easy to do, has been requested so many times, and what made it so popular with Total Commander fans.

  1. Are there any plans to display multiple color tags in the icon and column views? That’s the only reason I cannot use ForkLift. Too bad because everything else is perfect for me…

    1. Yes, we are already planning to add the ability to display multiple color tags in the icon view. Since this feature is also available in the column view in Finder and other apps, we are very likely to include it in ForkLift’s column view as well. However, implementing it for the Column view could be more challenging, but we hope to add it in the future.

  2. Multiple tags visible in Forklift… 🥹 I can’t believe it. I am touched. Have been begging for it for years.
Now we only need it in column view as well.
    Baby steps I guess.
But I have hope again for the best Finder replacement on the Mac. Thanks BinaryNights for listening.

    1. We are amazed we have made it this far without accidentally turning the app into a time machine. 🙂 Hopefully, the multiple tags will be added in the other views too.

  3. Hi, i’m trying to set up my FTPs as Favorites but every time I connect it says “Authentication failed: Enter the password for the server XYZ”. But when I paste the same password as I placed in favorites it works.

Also there is checkbox “Add to Key Chain” which doesn’t seem to work.

Any idea? Looks like currently no way of storing passwords for FTP.

    1. You most likely pasted the password incorrectly when you saved the favorite. It is possible that you have added a leading or trailing Space. Update the password by editing the favorite and make sure to enter the password correctly or paste it correctly. The password should be saved without issues. – You can edit the favorite by right-clicking it in the sidebar and selecting Edit.

  4. If I use the rename tool the change the upper and lower case of files I have to confirm a query for each individual file as to whether the file should be replaced. I don’t think that’s intentional. If I rename a bunch of files with that tool by appending a prefix, for example, then this query does not take place.

  5. Curious if you will ever fix the issues with “Show One Pane” and “Show Two Panes”?

I typically use both panes in List view and interact between them often. Because of file length on some files, i regularly switch to one pane so that i can see more info. If i do this from the right pane, when i “Show Two Panes”, Forklift 4 forgets which side this pane was on, and puts it as the left pane. What’s worse is that it also forgets the path of the original left pane (and also the “back” history), so it simply spawns a new 2nd pane on the right, at the default path. This is a complete productivity showstopper… It has been going on since the Forklift 4 rewrite, and even though I’ve reported and asked about it several times, it never gets addressed. I check periodically for new updates in the blog and run the trial just to see if this is finally fixed, but here we are on 4.2, 17 updates and more than a year later later.

I guess I’m still stuck with Forklift 3 (last update was Sept 2022) so long as it keeps working on newer versions of macOS, but ideally i’d like to pay you for newer efficiencies and features, not to mention bug fixes… really disappointed that such significant bug is such low priority of things to fix.

    1. We have completely changed the behavior of closing a pane in ForkLift 4. When a pane is closed, its content and settings are not saved, so it cannot be restored. We do not plan to reverse this behavior, as doing so would require significant changes to the code. However, we are considering adding a new feature that allows zooming into a pane, which would function similarly to how switching between one-pane and two-pane modes worked in ForkLift 3.

  6. Are there any plans to add contextual menu functionality for Microsoft OneDrive functions such as “Copy Link” and “View Online” etc.?

If so, great! If not, is it a technical problem, or just a personal choice to not implement the functionality?

    1. Some of those is already available when you connect directly to OneDrive in ForkLift. You can copy the link and open the item online. The Copy URL command copies its path and if you hold down the Alt key then the Copy URL command becomes Open URL, which will open the item online. Adding the other options is on our feature request list.

  7. Amazon file permissions I hope to be able to pre-select permissions when uploading, without having to select and adjust permissions after uploading

    1. This is already on our feature request list. I hope that a way to set the permissions can be added in the future.

  8. hello. I’m contacting you because I’m having a problem with my forklift. I was able to use webdav until version 4.1.5, but since the update, access has been blocked. I am using a product called nas2dual by iptime. When I try to connect, I get a message that says “The resource could not be loaded because the App Transport Security policy requires the use of a secure connection.” When I connect to another FTP, I can connect without any problems. Please check the problem and look forward to your reply.

  9. Yes I got 4.1.5 from the link you sent me and confirmed that webdav connection is working. I can’t change it to https in the nas settings because it requires a separate authentication setting, so I can’t do it now. When I search for the problem on the web, I can’t find any way to confirm it except that the plist says to change the setting.I use the nas mainly for data, so I’m not a programmer and can’t set up the code.I need help.

    1. We have checked and also the http connection should work in 4.2 and we see no reason why the behavior could have changed since version 4.1.5. We haven’t changed anything in the code, which should have this effect.

Please try the latest version (4.2.1) too. Which macOS version do you use? Have you recently updated? Which is the last version, which is working correctly for you? https://download.binarynights.com/ForkLift/ForkLift4.1.5.zip – if you change the number at the end, you can download each version.

    1. ForkLift automatically switches between the light and dark themes if you use the Default theme. Do you want it to switch between custom themes, where you could set one light and one dark theme? We want to add that feature but we don’t really know how to create a nice GUI for it in the Settings. Hopefully, that can be added in the future.

        1. I believe, you should see a folder icon in the Preview and not the preview of that icon, since that is a folder and not a file. Please contact us regarding this issue in an email and send me a screenshot of the pane where iCloud is open and the Preview pane. Let us know what macOS version you are using. at support [at] binarynights [dot] com
