ForkLift 4.2.5 Temporarily Removed – New Version Coming Soon
[Edited: February 25, 2025] This post has been updated to reflect the removal of ForkLift 4.2.5 due to reported issues.
Earlier today, we released ForkLift 4.2.5, introducing a major change: switching from libssh2 to OpenSSH for SFTP connections. In our original announcement, we highlighted that while this transition brings significant benefits – such as support for ProxyJump and Include in SSH config files – it could also lead to issues for some users.
Since the release, we have received reports of unexpected problems affecting usability. As a result, we have decided to temporarily remove ForkLift 4.2.5 from our website while we work on a fix. A new, improved version addressing these issues will be available tomorrow.
We appreciate your patience and feedback during this transition. If you are experiencing issues, you can temporarily switch back to libssh2 using the following command in Terminal:
defaults write com.binarynights.ForkLift.plist useLibSSH2 true
Alternatively, you can download ForkLift 4.2.4 at the end of this blog post and use that version.
We remain committed to making this switch as smooth as possible and ensuring that ForkLift provides the best experience for all users. While we are working to fix all reported issues, it is possible that new versions may still contain some unexpected problems. If you encounter any issues, please let us know so we can continue improving ForkLift. Stay tuned for the next update coming soon!
It looks like OpenSSH only works with macOS 15.2 and later?
Thank you for reporting, we will look into that.
I have tested and the OpenSSH implementation works on earlier macOS versions as well. Why do you think that is doesn’t?
Because of the error message when I try to open a SFTP connection.
AskPassTool quit unexpectedly.
The item can’t be opened
Authentication error: dyld[XXXXX]: Symbol not found: _swift_getTypeByMangledNameInContext2
Referenced from: /Applications/ForkLift.app/Contents/Resources/AskPassTool.app/Contents/MacOS/AskPassTool (built for macOS 15.2 which is newer than running OS)

Thank you for sending me that message. It seems that you are right, we are going to fix this.
Was unable to overwrite folders with 4.2.5 (deleteDirectory(_:) not implemented) . And also had at least 5 app crashes. Only purchased ForkLift 2 hours ago so was going to request a refund until I saw this post.
4.2.4 has resolved all problems for me so far.
Sorry for these issues, we will release a new version tomorrow, which will fix the deletion issue. Please test the new version as well and let us know what you see.
Please send us the crash reports of these crashes directly, you have access to them in the Console app. Send them at support [at] binarynights [dot] com
Still no syncing between local/remote if tin “Column View”?
*Sync Browsing
Unfortunately, not.
It’s the only thing preventing me form leaving transmit.
Is this bug fix planned?
This is not really a bug but a missing feature of the column view. We should change the whole behavior of the column view, which is on our feature request list but not on our short term to-do list.
This version is absolutely useless! If you group the files by file type and then sort them in the browser, the list jumps back and forth constantly. You’re just busy trying to find the file you selected seconds before because the sorting of the file types keeps changing. That’s so bad.
I’ve deleted Forklift for now – and am considering whether I should ask for my money back!
I’m sorry for the issue. Which version do you mean 4.2.4 or 4.2.5?
I was able to reproduce this issue, we will try to fix it soon. Probably not in the new version, which we want to release today, but soon.
Sorry that was the wrong blog. I am referring to version 4.2.4.
And the issue arised with 4.2.4 It wasn’t present in the version before
We will look into it. Version 4.2.6 doesn’t contain a fix yet. You can download previous versions from our blog.
Thank you! Finally you fixed it with version 4.2.8!!
v4.2.6 (via SetApp) now get the “AskPassTool” error when trying to use SFTP
Using “defaults write com.binarynights.forklift-setapp.plist useLibSSH2 true” resolved it for now.
We are sorry for this issue. We hope that Setapp will publish the new, fixed version soon.
