  1. … but unfortunately the “connect to server issue” (see my posts on FL4.0.4) is still existing. I opened a ticket two days ago via email – and: still waiting just for a reply … I think: there are more issues w higher priority.

  2. Nice rework with a more responsive UI!

I really miss the commader shortkeys preset, can you bring it back please ?

There is an issue with webdav connections. A second connection doesn’t show any conten, when the first connection was established to the same domain but with a different user.

    1. There is no option to choose the Commander key biding set the same way as in ForkLift 3 but you can change the shortcuts individually. You should change these commands:
      Open : Enter, Enclosing Folder : Backspace, Quick Look : F3, Rename : Shift-F6, Edit : F4, Move to Trash: F8, Delete: Option-F8, New Folder : F7, New File: Shift-F4, Find: Option-F7, Refresh: F2, Duplicate: Shift-F5, Compress: Option-F5

We will investigate the WebDAV issue.

      1. Hey,

What was the reason for changing the keyboard shortcuts?
It’s a pretty drastic change, and unexpected.
Changing every single shortcut back to the previous one is obviously not an option, so it would be great if you could offer the previous keyboard shortcut set as an alternative choice.

I would stick to ForkLift if I could, but I upgraded my OS to Ventura, and the old version is practically unusable, because it’s unbelievably slow…

        1. Hi,
Just a little correction: “I would stick to ForkLift” meant to be “I would stick to ForkLift 3.x”.

          Sorry about that!

          Cheers,
          Imre

        2. The Commander Style shortcuts aren’t available in ForkLift but you only have to change a few shortcuts if you would like to use those shortcuts. Unfortunately, the shortcuts aren’t imported from ForkLift 3, so if you have changed a lot of shortcuts, then you have to set those manually again. I’m sorry for that but I hope, you can do that and you can start using ForkLift 4.

          1. Hi Agnes,

The previous version had a built-in option to select between commander and finder style shortcuts. Is there any plan to bring it back?

What’s the best way to submit a feature request?
There are a lot of things missing, like font customization, tooltips for tabs, etc.
This is a paid upgrade, and I’m not particularly happy about it, to be honest.

            Thanks,
            Imre

            1. I feel the EXACT same way…

Please bring back the Commander shortcuts. I’m trying to remap the shortcuts now on FL4 and it’s not even clear if I can do that.

            2. Sorry for not answering before but I haven’t seen this comment until now. You can send us feature request at support [at] binarynights [dot] com

  3. After updating to 4.0.4 or 4.0.5, Command Tools, which used to work, no longer works.
However, after removing shebang, it now works correctly.
Specifically, the “#! /usr/bin/bash” was removed.
If you are suffering from the same phenomenon, we recommend that you try deleting shebang as a trial.

On a different topic, I also tried various other filers when I upgraded from ForkLift 3.5.8 to v4.
ForkLift is the only one that has all the features I desire.
I will continue to support you.

I know I’m being persistent, but please review the speed at which “New Folder with Selection” works 🙂

    Cheers to the developers!

    1. Yeah but in 4.0.5 is zsh implied so bash scripts won’t run. My workaround for now is to use a .sh script with $SOURCE_SELECTION_PATHS as arguments and then I can still use shebang to run bash.

    2. We will try to improve the tools, hopefully, shebang will work as expected soon. Unfortunately, solving that issue is more complex than it seems.

  4. Don’t want to be a d*ck, but it seems that those that bought FL 4 are QA and beta testers. Will stick with FL 3 for now.

    1. Hi Alex,

Your right, it is the best thing to do for now.

Forklift 4 has still too many issues. And more important, Forklift 4 has less options and functionality compared to Forklift 3.
So stick to Forklift 3. Do not buy Forklift 4.

  5. Emails *.eml still don’t work in the Preview pane and with Quicklook. I installed the version 3 and work with that version. Really sad about the version 4 over all. It’s seems to be like a version 3 without many features, but sold as new…

  6. Hi Agnesbinary!

There’s one interface experience continues to aggravate me in an otherwise great experience: If I navigate to a subfolder in column view and then change views to Icon or List, the window doesn’t stay on the folder I’ve just selected, but the root folder I started with (as the Finder does). More strangely, the breadcrumb trail DOES some the nested folder I’ve navigated to, so I can click onto the destination to get me back there. But this is a very slow and multi-step interaction involving mousing around instead of a simple keyboard shortcut.

Can you fix this to behave like the finder?

  7. Hello,
since we moved to FL 4, we have many issues when connecting to ftp services.
With the last version (4.0.5), FL crashed multiple times, when up-/downloading with a ftp-connection. Also uploads are aborted and don’t continue with a new attempt.
    We are running macOS Monterey.

    Best
    Maik

    1. I’m sorry to hear that. Please send us the crash reports at support [at] binarynights [dot] com you can also send us the ftp log:

      0. Disconnect from the server if you are connected
      1. Open the Console app (Applications > Utilities > Console)
      2. Make sure that your own device is selected in the sidebar
      3. Click “Start Streaming” in the main window or the Start button in the toolbar if there are no messages inside the main Console window
      4. Search for the name of the favorite that you want to connect to (or if you haven’t added the server as a favorite, then search for the term that is entered into the Server field on the connect panel)
      5. In the search field change “Any” to “Category”
      6. Make sure that “Include Info Messages” and “Include Debug Messages” are enabled in the Action menu
      7. Try to connect in ForkLift to your server
      8. Copy the logs after ForkLift has crashed or there is some issue and send it to us

  8. Question: is there (also) a problem with the management of files located on a Synology NAS?…
With version 3 of ForkLift, deleting files containing accented characters in their name (à, é, è…) posed no problem. With the latest version 4.0.5, their deletion is impossible!…
There is (really) still a lot of work left, unfortunately for us!…

    1. I believe that that is not a general problem. I think it matters where those files were created. Can you send us some files that you can’t transfer? If possible, then please send us text files. At support [at] binarynights [dot] com

  9. Unfortunately the search for files in FL4 doesn’t work…

If I search for pdf-Files on my iCloud Drive I didn’t get even one result. But there are hundreds of pdf’s. And, yes they’re all downloaded. In addition to this the search is very slow. I did the same search with the finder, this works like it’s supposed to.

I searches for “pdf” with the filter option “by kind”, “by extension”…

    1. ForkLift searches within the active folder, if you want to search in its subfolders, then you have to enable the “Search in Subfolders” option as well. If you don’t use that option then you are filtering the active folder. If you want to search your entire user folder, then you should search inside your home directory and enable search in subfolders. ForkLift’s own search engine uses brute force, so it is slow because it checks all the items inside the folders you search in to find the matching items, it looks at every item one by one. Finder uses Spotlight’s metadata, a cached database to quickly find the items. You can also use Spotlight search in ForkLift which uses the same metadata and is fast as well. To use Spotlight, you should select one of the Spotlight options in the Settings of the Search in ForkLift. You can see the settings by clicking the magnifying glass in the search field.

  10. In the Network Connect menu, the server history is no longer present. Is this a bug or feature? Or is this a setting?

  11. Anyone get Forklift 4 to work with 1Password SSH agent? I get a Passphrase required popup when using either private or public key when no password is required

Will scrap my license if this not work before next license period. Currently I can’t use Forklift 4 with my setup.

    1. We are currently investigating this issue. Please send us an email at support [at] binarynights [dot] com and show us how in a screen recording (if you ca create one) how you try to connect exactly.

  12. This version doesn’t contain the option to enter your previous license key to claim the upgrade bonus. That feature needs a little bit more testing but it is coming soon.

How long must be wait for this 100 Day- Bonus?

  13. Stop!… Mass is said!…

I tried ForkLift 4, patiently, for a few weeks and that was enough: too many bugs and instabilities!…
And then I just have to leave FL 4, switch to ForkLift 3.5.8 to finally see my procedure put in place and applied, and more generally, find a stable working environment with perfectly operational functions.

FL 3 remains in my eyes an incomparable tool which definitively bury the Finder (macOS Ventura 13.6.1) for file management both locally and over the network.

Too bad, FL 4 offered a nice look and feel, but that is no longer enough. There is still a lot of work left.

    Good luck.

  14. Thanks for fixing the “leaving home”-directory of currently logged in user with version 4.0.5
Unfortunately a super annoying error is still happening:

Each time I double click a file to open in my local editor (sublime or cursor.sh) I am getting an error message at first attempt.
    “Object can’t be opened
File “some path” can not be downloaded”.
I then must close the error message and repeat double click on desired file.
    Finally it opens as expected.
    This happens since FL4 release.

It would be so nice, if you fixed this, as it annoys me very much in my workflows.

  15. Hi, using 4.0.5 (429). I have encountered a problem/bug with transferring a Final Cut Pro project (a folder in disguise) to my UnRaid NAS using SFTP. If I drag drop a project to the destination NAS folder, say 125Mb in total size. The copy starts and continues up to and past the size of the source folder. Tried multiple FCPX projects and they all exceed the source folder/project size. I can only stop it manually. I can leave it and it was still copying days later at 4.5Tb when the project is a lot smaller.
    Should this happen?
    Why is this happening?
    Any solution?
Using an Intel MacPro with Sonoma 14.1.2.
    Thank you.

    1. Small update.
The FCPX file transfer exceeding the original size occurs when transferring from the Mac to the NAS. Ok when from the NAS to the Mac.
On transferring a FCPX project size of say original size of 93Mb to the NAS and manually stop the copy at say 1Gb. The FCPX copied back to the Mac is seen as 1Gb. Open the project in FCPX and close without any user changes, the project size returns to 93Mb. The FCPX appears to be undamaged.

This also occurs if the project is renamed to become an ordinary folder on the Mac.

      1. Just to make sure I understand this correctly. When you are copying from the NAS to the Mac, everything is normal. When you are copying from the Mac to the NAS, then the copy goes on indefinitely but if you stop the transfer after more data has been transferred as the original size, then that project is actually copied over “normally” but its size seems to be much bigger and if you copy it back to the MAC, you can work with it normally.

        1. Can you open the project also from the NAS? Does that also work or do you have to copy it back to the Mac first to make it work? – What happens if you try to rename the project on the NAS? Does the file change back to its normal size after that?
        2. Can you send us some FCPX project files at support [at] binarynights [dot] com?

        1. FCPX projects are folders in disguise containing hundreds or thousands of files. This is a problem too –> Some files within the folder cannot be copied, appears random, and you are asked to skip the file. Doing so breaks the project.
Zipping the FCPX project up into one file and transferring copies across as you would expect no problem. Other single files are ok too. Large folders have issues.
FCPX projects can be large say 1 or 2 Gb. This may fail to be emailed. Any other way to get FCPX project to you? (I’ll compress it first to be a single file)

        2. Renaming the file via Forklift gives permission denied. Renaming the FCPX directly on the NAS does not change the project size. Also does not make the time to transfer any shorter. It keeps recalculating the fcpx folder size as it transfers.

        3. Please see your support@ inbox for an email with a link to a video demonstrating the issue.
May be a pattern? The file transfer size from the Mac to the UnRaid NAS is seen as twice the size of the project on the MAC by Forklift. Forklift copies up to and past twice the size after which the project is ‘complete’. Provided no files in the transfer have timed out and so skipped (another issue), the FPCX project is not damaged, it is ok.

    1. If you think that we need to look into this, then contact us regarding this issue via email at support [at] binarynights [dot] com and provide more info.

  16. I’ve trouble with the shortcut association.

I’ve changed the “clone window” shortcut from CMD+SHIFT+c to OPTION+SHIFT+c but when using the new shortcut the selection jumps to every folder an file staring with the letter c and only after the last file starting with c is reached the clone action is executed.

This selection of folders and files happens also when pressing SHIFT+any letter, OPTION+any letter and SHIFT+OPTION+any letter which, in my opinion is wrong. SHIFT+c e.g. should jump to something starting with a capital C. The other combinations should do nothing or else execute the action associated with a shortcut.

  17. I am backing up large video files on a NAS by syncing to a USB drive. When the USB get’s full, I’d like to change the sync to a new USB drive and only sync files created after the date of the switch (and keep the old USB drive in storage)

I can’t figure out how to do this.

    1. That is not possible in ForkLift and incorporating that feature into ForkLift is not currently feasible, as it falls outside the intended scope of ForkLift. At this time, we do not have plans to implement such an option in ForkLift.

      1. OK thanks….I thought of two workarounds. I can archive the NAS folders and put new files in a new folder or I can use Mac Animator to get the files.

  18. I changed the font size in settings menu of mac OS Sonoma to 16 pt but unfortunately in forklift left panel and menu have the bigger font size. In the other menus are the old and small font sizes. The icons are small too. I am working with a large screen of 40 zoll.

    1. I’m not sure where you can change the font size in the System Preferences so that it has an effect on the font size inside ForkLift but unfortunately, not all fonts can be changed in ForkLift. If you change the font size, only the text inside the panes changes and not the text in the sidebar, tool bar, etc. You can change the font size inside ForkLift on the View Options Panel. (Command-J or from the View menu) Every tab (or folder) has its own settings, so you have to change the settings in all tabs. Unfortunately, the icon size can’t be changed. Making that possible is on our feature request list.

  19. FL4 4.0.5 (429), list view, renaming files: the complete list slides down over two or more file entries after having closed renaming by hitting the ENTER-key. Followed by COMMAND-Z the complete list is continuing to slide down. (?!)

    1. Please send a screen recording about this. Make sure that the whole ForkLift window is visible. This behavior can be influenced by a lot of settings that you are using (sorting, grouping of files, etc) It is important to see all of those things to reproduce the issue. Please send the recording at support [at] bianrynights [dot] com

  20. Hi,
svg files won’t preview anymore in Forklift 4 (it was working with version 3). It gives me the code, but I need the preview.
Is there anything I can do about it ?
